Taiwan Snacks

Salty Rice PuddingSnacking is deeply woven into the fabric of daily life in Taiwan. The plethora of snack foods available on the island opens a window to local culture. In fact, one of the quickest ways to experience the local flavor of Taiwan is to visit one of the many night markets in Taiwan, each with a tempting array of delicious delicacies. At each market, visitors can sample a wide selection of snack foods made with locally sourced ingredients. Since Taiwan is an island surrounded by oceans, seafood is a major ingredient in night markets, from oyster omelets and stir-fried cuttlefish to seafood congee, squid stew, and milkfish soup, all of it addictively fresh and tasty.
Taiwan Snacks*Pearl Milk Tea、Danzai Noodles、Stinky Tofu

Pearl Milk Tea:
Also known as "Bubble milk tea," pearl milk tea originates from Taichung and is made from a mixture of black tea, milk, and sago pearls. The combination of fragrant tea and chewy sago has made this beverage popular not only in Taiwan but in other countries as well. At many Chinatowns across the world, you can find this refreshing beverage.

Danzai Noodles:
Oil noodles and bean sprouts are the main ingredients in this Tainan specialty dish. The noodles are served in a small bowl and usually topped with meat or an egg boiled in soy sauce for an extra flavor boost.

Shrimp Pork Soup:
With seas on all side, Taiwan enjoys a bounty of seafood that is served up in a wide variety of snack foods that have become ingrained in the culinary tradition of the island. Shrimp pork soup is one of these dishes and has become a night market mainstay. This dish is made mostly of shrimp potage flavored with stewed pork and a thickening dash of potato starch to add flavor and chewiness. Add a splash of black vinegar to complement the sweetness of the soup and make this tasty dish even more delicious.

Taiwan Snacks

Oyster Omelet:
Sea-fresh oysters are an important ingredient in this popular snack, available at just about every night market in Taiwan. The oysters are coated in potato starch and tapioca. Eggs and leafy vegetables are added to the mixture, which is skillet fried over a high flame. A sweet and sour sauce further adds to the addictively delicious taste.

Meat Rice Tamales:
These tamales are made of glutinous rice, mushrooms, peanuts, egg yolks and pork all wrapped up in bamboo leaves, which impart their subtle flavor. Originally eaten only during the Dragon Boat Festival, this dish has become a year-round attraction at night markets throughout Taiwan.

Stinky Tofu:
With stinky tofu, the greater the smell, the tastier the results. And while many people are put off by the smell, those who take the plunge are usually won over by this distinctively yummy treat. Stinky tofu is made of large squares of fermented tofu fried in oil and then cut into four smaller pieces and served with a garnish of pickled cabbage. The crispy skin of tofu and its soft inside are the best parts of this dish's charm.

Taiwanese Meatballs:
Changhua and Hsinchu counties are the most famous places for Taiwanese meatballs. In Changhua, the meatballs are deep-fried, while those in Hsinchu are steamed, giving each local variety a distinctive taste. The meatballs are cooked in an outer wrapper made of tapioca powder, rice powder, potato starch, and water, while the filling includes pork, mushroom, bamboo shoots and other ingredients. The chewy outer skin and fragrant filling make a perfectly delicious match

Coffin Sandwich:
This Tainan specialty often turns heads for its very unusual name. The sandwich is a thick slice of bread with a hollow center filled with a mixture of chicken meat and liver, shrimp, carrots, potatoes, and milk. The filling is then covered with another piece of bread and cut into four pieces. Best when serving hot.

Veggie and Meat Wrap:
These wraps are packed with goodies, including boiled cabbage, bean sprouts, sliced fried eggs, barbecued pork, peanut powder and powdered sugar, all wrapped up in a thin spring roll skin and served warm. This delicious treat is one of the most popular snacks at night markets throughout Taiwan.

Oyster Vermicelli :
No night market worth the name is without this unassuming little treat. The quality of this dish is judged by the freshness of the oysters and chewiness of noodles. The dish is made with a type of red vermicelli that does not crumble easily. The noodles are served in a soup stock with fresh oysters and soy stewed large intestines and flavored with black vinegar, a special sauce, and a garnish of cilantro.
Steamed Sandwich:
Steamed sandwiches ("guabao") were originally eaten during employee dinner parties held on the 16th day of the 12th lunar month, but today they can be enjoyed at night markets throughout the year. The sandwiches resemble a kind of hamburger made with a soft white bun. The bun is stuffed with melt-in-your-mouth pork and garnished with pickled vegetables, peanut powder and cilantro, creating a nose-pleasing and tasty combination.

Crushed Ice Dessert:
This popular dessert is a base of crushed ice flavored with mung beans, adzuki beans, starch balls, taro, jelly fig and other toppings and then sprinkled with sugar water, offering sweet and cool relief on a hot summer day. Today, you can also find creative new variations with toppings of mangoes, strawberries and other seasonal fruit.

'Fake eggs' sold in Malaysia

By MSN News, 4/7/2011

A housewife lodged a complaint with the Consumers Association of Penang (CAP) over "fake eggs", The Star, a Malaysian daily reported.

Stock Xchng(Stock Xchng)

According to CAP president S.M. Mohamed Idris, the woman described the eggs, bought in Pulau Tikus, as smelling differently than real eggs. In addition to being tasteless, she said they were also bigger than normal eggs and possessed unusual shapes.
The counterfeit eggs "had a rougher surface" compared to the real deal. "The fake egg white and yolk quickly mixed together, unlike that of real eggs," said Idris.
After boiling and opening the fake egg, the yolk was discovered to have a more "yellowish" colour in comparison to genuine eggs.
So taking into account all the aforementioned features, you should be especially careful when purchasing eggs.
Fake eggs are also apparently more expensive. A 30-egg tray of the real deal costs about RM10.50. The fake ones are priced at RM11.

Taiwan planning legal prostitution zones

By Agence France-Presse, Updated: 4/7/2011

Taiwan's government said Thursday it is planning to create legal red-light districts so that it can police the sex trade more easily and protect sex workers' rights.

Taiwan's government said Thursday it is planning to create legal red-light districts so that it can police the sex trade more easily and protect sex workers' rights.
Under the proposal, sex workers would be able to apply for licences to operate in authorised zones and would be punished for plying their trade elsewhere, along with their clients.
Prostitutes currently face three days in jail or a fine of up to Tw$30,000 ($1,000) if they are caught providing sexual services while their clients go unpunished.
"The government intends to open up the sex industry to a moderate degree to better regulate it in accordance with the majority of public opinions," said Liu Wen-shih, of the interior ministry, which is due to submit the proposal to the cabinet next month.
A poll commissioned by the ministry late last year found that 76.5 percent were in favour of conditionally opening up the sex trade while 14.5 percent wanted a ban and 7.6 percent supported unconditional opening.
The ministry dropped an earlier plan to allow small-scale brothels without zoning because it would be too difficult to keep a tab on them, Liu said.
While there is no official figure for the scale of Taiwan's sex industry, observers estimate it involves hundreds of thousands of people and generates billions of dollars a year.

Total 6 mins!(+extra=12mins!)

3. Extra 2 mins

4. Extra 5 mins

5. Extra 5 mins

Bath

Total = A Relaxing 30mins!

7. 10 mins

9. 10 mins

Radiation scare at Japan nuclear plant

By Agence France-Presse, Updated: 3/28/2011

Dangerous levels of radiation detected in water thought to be leaking from a stricken Japanese reactor have dealt a new blow in efforts to avert a nuclear disaster.

Dangerous levels of radiation detected in water thought to be leaking from a stricken Japanese reactor have dealt a new blow in efforts to avert a nuclear disaster.
Radiation in puddles near reactor two at the Fukushima plant was more than 1,000 millisieverts per hour, forcing the evacuation of workers toiling to restore the cooling systems, operator Tokyo Electric Power (TEPCO) said.
"It is an extremely high figure," nuclear safety agency spokesman Hidehiko Nishiyama said, adding there was a "high possibility" that the contaminated water had leaked from the reactor.
A single dose of 1,000 millisieverts can cause temporary radiation sickness, including nausea and vomiting. An exposure of 100 millisieverts per year is considered the lowest level at which an increase in cancer risk is evident.
Earlier Monday Japan lifted a tsunami warning after a 6.1-magnitude earthquake hit off the northeast coast, the area devastated by the March 11 earthquake and tsunami, the national weather agency said.
TEPCO said the concentration of radioactive substances in the water was 100,000 times higher than would usually be found in water in a reactor core, correcting an earlier assessment which said it was 10 million times higher, Kyodo News reported.
Workers were trying to pinpoint the exact source of the radioactive water leak, but there are concerns that fuel rod vessels or their valves and pipes are damaged.
A key concern is how to safely pump away the highly radioactive water, but chief government spokesman Yukio Edano admitted progress at the site was slow.
"It will take some time in order to remove the water while ensuring the safety of workers," Edano told a press conference. Focus: Tsunami harpoons Japanese whaling town
There was also a warning from Yukiya Amano, director general of the International Atomic Energy Agency, that the emergency could go on for weeks, if not months, given the damage to the plant, The New York Times reported.
An update on the agency's website said the situation at the Fukushima plant "remains very serious."
Last week three workers received medical treatment after stepping in radioactive water during efforts to install cables and restore critical reactor cooling systems. Focus: Furnaces fired up at tsunami-struck crematorium
The incident heaped more pressure on the plant operator because two were hospitalised after wearing inadequate safety gear.
But officials said Sunday the three would be discharged from medical care with no sign of serious injuries, apparently because they suffered only localised exposure to their feet.
The March 11 magnitude 9.0 earthquake and huge tsunami left more than 27,000 people dead or missing, wiping out entire towns.
The wave knocked out cooling systems for the six reactors at the Fukushima plant, leading to suspected partial meltdowns in three of them. Hydrogen explosions and fires have also ripped through the facility. Scene: Power crunch in Tokyo
Fire engines have hosed huge amounts of seawater onto the plant to try to keep the fuel rods inside reactor cores and pools from being exposed to the air, and prevent a full meltdown.
Olivier Isnard, an expert with the French Institute for Radiological Protection and Nuclear Safety, said the reading of 1,000 millisieverts in the water at the plant was "proof that the reactor core partially melted."
Several hundred metres (yards) offshore, levels of radioactive iodine some 1,850 times the legal limit were reported Sunday, up from 1,250 times on Saturday, but officials ruled out an immediate threat to marine life and seafood safety.

The nuclear safety agency on Sunday said workers hoped to start using electric pumps instead of fire trucks for cooling operations at reactor number one.
High-voltage electric cables have been reconnected to the reactors and power has been partially restored to enable lighting in some reactor control rooms.
Worried about the possible corrosive effect of salt in the crippled plant, engineers have started pumping fresh water into some of the reactors.
Radioactive vapour seeping from the plant has contaminated tap water and farm produce in the region, leading to shipment halts in Japan as well as the United States, European Union, China and a host of other nations.
A Kyodo survey showed 58.2 percent of respondents disapproved of the government's handling of the nuclear crisis.

China detects low levels of radioactive iodine in air

By Agence France-Presse, Updated: 3/27/2011

Authorities in northeast China have detected extremely low levels of radioactive iodine in the air which they say is from the stricken nuclear power plant in Japan, state media and officials said.

Authorities in northeast China have detected extremely low levels of radioactive iodine in the air which they say is from the stricken nuclear power plant in Japan, state media and officials said.
The environment ministry said Saturday that monitoring stations in Heilongjiang province had found "infinitesimal" traces of radioactive iodine-131, but the public did not need to take "protective measures".
China's National Nuclear Emergency Coordination Committee said the radioactive iodine had been emitted by the nuclear power facility in Fukushima, which was crippled by a massive quake and ensuing tsunami two weeks ago.
But the committee said "public health and the environment remain unaffected by radioactivity" released by the plant, the official Xinhua news agency reported.
On Friday, China banned imports of several food products from Japan and stepped up checks on a host of other goods amid fears of contamination.
The ban was announced after the country's safety watchdog reported finding elevated radiation levels on two Japanese travellers after they arrived in eastern China from Tokyo.
The General Administration of Quality Supervision, Inspection and Quarantine said it had also detected radiation on a Japanese merchant vessel that berthed in the southeastern port city of Xiamen on Monday.
The 9.0-magnitude quake and monster waves which struck Japan on March 11 have devastated large areas of the country, damaged the plant on its eastern coast and stoked contamination fears both at home and abroad.
In the wake of the twin disasters, many Chinese stores reported panic-buying of salt, with consumers mistakenly believing that its iodine could protect against radiation poisoning.
